Common Dental Emergencies
Unexplained Pain or Toothache
This emergency is usually due to sensitive teeth, cavities and chipped or cracked teeth which exposed dentin or pulp (sensitive nerve endings). This can be the result of biting on something hard, a weak tooth due to loss of enamel or poor oral hygiene leading to cavities and infections. The appropriate procedure varies greatly in relation to the cause of the pain, and can include cavity fillings, crowns, root canals and even extractions. Impact to the Jaw This is often the result of a fall or physical violence. In the case of a broken jaw, an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon is required to reset the jaw. Depending on the severity of the injury, immediate surgery may be required. In the worst cases, reconstructive surgery must be done. Impact to the Mouth This may be caused by an object such as a rock or a ball, or may be the result of a fall where the mouth directly impacted a hard surface. There is often bleeding involved, which must be stopped right away. Gums and Teeth are often damaged, leading to intense pain and swelling. A periodontist may be required in some serious cases of gum injury. The teeth may experience once of the various issues below. |
Broken Tooth (Fracture)
There are many types of dental fractures. If a tooth is broken in half, the examination will determine whether there is dentin exposed and if a root canal is required. Next, a crown will be placed on the natural tooth to “complete it” back to its original look and function. At times, a fracture may continue into the gumline. In this case, an x-ray is done to determine the nature and the extent of the fracture. This may require an extraction and/or a root canal. Finally, if there are fragments of the fracture is complex, an oral surgeon may be required to remove the tooth and prepare for dental implants. |
Cracked Tooth (Fracture)
Cracked Teeth will follow many of the same processes as a broken tooth, however efforts will be made to preserve the natural tooth and determine if the crack can heal and a veneer can be placed on top to conceal the crack. If the crack is severe, the fragment of tooth must be removed and replaced by a crown.

Chipped Tooth (Minor Fracture)
This is one of the most common dental accidents. Although this is visually unappealing, unless it causes severe pain or irritation to soft tissue, a chipped tooth typically does not consist a dental emergency. Chipped teeth can often be fixed with simple cosmetic procedures such as a crown, and typically do not need extraction or root canal. This will always preserve your natural tooth while adding a dental prosthesis (crown), which is cemented in place. |
Loose Tooth (Luxation)
Often the result of an impact to the tooth jaw, a loose tooth can also occur due to prolonged poor oral health. An examination will be done to determine whether the tooth can be salvaged, however this will at times result in an extraction and a dental implant. Once the implant is in place, an abutment is secured to it, and a crown is attached.
Infection (Abscess)
Infections can vary in severity, but are typically minor and often to happen to everyone at one point in their lives. These include canker sores, gingivitis, cold sores, folate deficiency, leukoplakia, oral thrush or even mouth cancer.
Sores can become present on any soft tissue area such as the lip, tongue, gum, inner cheek and the room of the mouth. They will cause inflammation and swelling, which can lead to significant pain.
Cold sores, can at times indicate a virus such as oral herpes. Often, these can be treated with the use of antibiotics. If you are experiencing an oral infection that is causing you unbearable discomfort, you must see a dentist right away.
Uncontrolled Bleeding
The main cause of oral bleeding is gingivitis. This is a gum disease that is typically caused by poor oral hygiene. This can cause further discomforts such as tooth sensitivity, infections and ulcers. The bleeding often cannot be stopped due to the fact that it is within the mouth and cannot heal using air to create scabs or clots which seal the wound.
The bleeding must first be controlled. Usually, gauze is applied to keep the area dry and soak the blood. In serious cases, stitching may be required. Bleeding is often the result of symptoms of another over-arching oral issue, which our dentists will determine during the examination and speak with you about the potential solutions and options.
